Keto: Fat Fast

Yesterday, I began a new 3-day journey called a FAT FAST. My first thought when I heard this {before reading about it} was that it was fasting from fat, when in reality you’re fueling your body with even more fat than normal.
Fat Fasting is recommended for those that are already keto-adapted and have either been stuck at a plateau or had a cheat day and want to get back on track. The idea is that you up your fat intake to approximately 80-90% calories from fat, while slightly decreasing your calories to around 1000-1200 calories per day. It is not recommended that anyone follow this for more than 5 days due to the risk of your body entering starvation mode, loss of muscle, and loss of important nutrients.
The Fat Fast method is something that has been around for a little while as a means of breakthrough during a stall on a low-carb diet. It can also be used to get yourself very quickly back into ketosis after a “cheat day”. This method was developed by Dr. Robert Atkins and was first mentioned in his book Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution. In 2013, another popular low-carb diet author published the Fat Fast Cookbook.
I have been following the keto lifestyle for about 10 weeks now and have lost 20.4 lbs total {yay!} but recently I have been stuck. I’m hoping that the Fat Fast can help boost my weight loss and get me back in to the downward swing that I was seeing pretty steadily for a while there. Mama’s got goals before her big 30th birthday on the 28th. Goals like, if I lose another 10 lbs, I can have a mint Oreo blizzard from Dairy Queen on my birthday.
I plan on eating the same thing each of the 3 days, since it is so short and much easier to plan/prep the same meals. I decided on 2 larger meals, rather than 5 small meals. I could easily break up my lunch and have a couple snacks instead. Here’s my weekly plan:
BREAKFAST
Coffee with 2 tbsp heavy whipping cream (HWC)
LUNCH
Deviled eggs (2) - made with olive oil mayo + relish
Black olives (60g)
White cheddar mini Babybel cheese
Oh Snap! Dilly Bites
Unsalted almonds (30g)
Sugar-free Jello
SUPPER
Spinach (2.5 oz) sautéed in Kerrygold garlic & herb butter (2 tbsp) and HWC (1 tbsp)
3 slices natural, thick-cut, nitrate free bacon
This brings me to a daily total of*:
1126 calories
100 grams fat (81%)
16 grams carbs (6%)
6 grams fiber
10 grams net carbs (3.5%)
36 grams protein (13%)
*Please be aware that different ingredients can yield different results.
I learned a lot about the Fat Fast from researching on Google & Pinterest. I also obtained an awesome document from the KetoDiet App, which was a HUGE help. If you decide to attempt the Fat Fast, I highly suggest doing some research and understanding its purpose before you dive in. Check back later this week for an update on how much I lost and where I’m going from here.
